North of England Under 13 and 15 Indoor Championships, – Sheffield, 5 February
Betsy Wilton and Isla Hiscocks were the Club’s sole participants at the North of England Under 13 and 15 Championships at the EIS Arena on Sunday.

Young Betsy had a excellent start to her first ever championship event at regional level.  She battled her way through to the final of the Under 13 Girl’s 60m by placing second  in her round one heat in 9.06 seconds and then going on to finish third and record 8.90 seconds in her semi-final. In the final she finished fifth, out of the eight starters, with a marginally slower time than her semi-final recording 8.97 seconds. She then went on to claim a very creditable sixth place in a close Long Jump contest.  Her best effort of 3.94m was just five centimetres off the bronze medal.

Isla Hiscocks reached the semi finals in the Girls Under 15 60m dash. She recorded 8.43 seconds in the round one heats  finishing second  and was marginally quicker with 8.42 seconds in the semi when placing fourth  and just missing out on a final berth.

It was a shame that this meeting clashed with the Sports Hall fixture as several of our younger athletes would have done well and benefited from the experience of competing  at a regional level championship. Perhaps this is something that can be avoided next year when the fixture calendar is being set!
