Jessie Brown has certainly started her 2023 outdoor season with a bang. The England Under 23 Javelin bronze medalist from last year produced her furthest throw ever at last Tuesday’s DADA (Derby Athletics Development Association) Open meeting at Moorways Sports Village when she unleashed the 600 gram Javelin out to a massive 47.55 metres. The throw not only improved her personal best from last year by over 2 metres but more importantly pushed her up to fourth in the U.K. Senior rankings and surpassed the 47 metre target set by U.K. Athletics for it’s elite Javelin throwers. The throw should guarantee Jessie a place at this year’s U.K. Championships later in the season at the new Birmingham Alexander Stadium and her next goal will be to further improve and hopefully break the magical 50 metre mark in the not too distant future.
The first midweek DADA meeting of the season was held on a pleasant spring evening with several other AVEAC athletes in action from Under 11 up to Senior level. As well as Jessie’s personal best performance, there were twelve other PBs set by the AVEAC contingent.
In the sprints Joe Moss got off to a flying start in the U13 75m and was rewarded with his fastest time ever registering 10.29 seconds. In second place was Betsy Wilton who also produced her fastest ever recording 10.93 seconds. Over the same distance Under 11 all rounder, Summer Biggs improved her best time to 11.82 seconds.
In the series of 100m races, Senior Decathlete Scott Ram finished second in the A race knocking three one-hundredths off his previous best dipping through the line in 11.26 seconds. Under 17 sprinter Hugo Thomas was just short of his best ever in the same race recording 11.97 seconds. Two more 100m personal bests came by the way of Jack Moss (U15) recording 13.57 seconds to finish third in his graded race and long jumper Grace Young (U20), one place behind Jack, who knocked quite a chunk off her previous best with a 13.79 seconds clocking.
In the 200m sprints Jack Moss went one better finishing second in the B race with another PB of 27.54 seconds. In Race C, Jasmine Shore (U15) was just short of her previous best finishing 3rd in a time of 29.71 seconds. Over the longer 600m there were more personal bests for Isla Douglas (U13) timed at 2:08.68 minutes and Olivia Irvine (U13) who finished on 2:18.30 minutes.
In the field, personal bests were recorded by Ruby Arnold, winner of the U11 Long Jump with a distance of 3.40m and Isla Douglas with 3.11m in the U13 event. In the Triple Jump, run for the first time at a DADA meeting, second claim AVEAC athlete Louise Hirst (U20) produced her best ever leap getting out to 11.12m and bettering the qualification standard for this year’s English School’s championships.
As well as Jessie Brown’s Javelin exploits, Scott Ram also added to his previous best in the Senior Men’s event throwing 44.01m with the 800 gram implement. Not far off his best ever, Gino Franco (U15) threw 33.19 metres while Jasmine Shore was just under a metre behind her best on 18.87m.
The second DADA meeting of the season will take place on Tuesday 2nd May and entries are now being taken on the DADA website – runjumpthrowathletics.co.uk.
Thanks are due to the organisers and officials for an action packed evening of athletics.
Nuneaton Season Opener, Pingles Stadium – Saturday 1st April
Another Javelin personal best was set by Daisy Kaye at this popular season opener at Nuneaton. Competing in Pool 1 she was the top Under 17 in action when she finished third behind older competitors. Her throw of 37.41 metres added almost two metres to her previous best set a few weeks earlier at the same venue. Daisy is also another of the Javelin squad to look out for this season as she pushes to better the 40 metre barrier.
