AVEAC young athletes got off to a great start on Sunday last, finishing second behind near neighbours Derby in their first Youth Development League match of the season at Moorways Sports Village. Competing against six other clubs from across the north east midlands, they amassed a total of 496 points behind a very strong Derby squad who scored an impressive 624. It was a tight contest for the runner up spot with Burton who chased AVEAC all the way and ended up on 460 points. Mansfield finished fourth followed by Rushcliffe, North Lincolnshire Alliance and Sutton-in-Ashfield Harriers in the lower positions.
Under 15 Boys
Our under 15 throwers were certainly on form scoring maximum points in five of the six A and B shot, discus and javelin pools. Pride of place must go to Riley Jones who was unbeatable in the A shot and discus contests scoring a double first in both with throws of 8.81m and 25.28m. In the A javelin Gino Franco took the honours with a solid throw of 34.09m, just under a metre down on his personal best. Sam Davies emulated his team mate winning the B event with a personal best throw of 23.95m. Good performances were also recorded by Nicholas Driver who registered throws of 15.06m while winning the B discus and 6.40m in the Shot which placed him second.
Meanwhile over in the High Jump, Sam Davies showed that he could jump a bit as well with an excellent clearance and personal best of 1.39m to finish second. Likewise Riley Jones swapped his throwing shoes for his jumping ones and cleared 1.33m to score maximum points in the B pool.
On the track AVEAC’s best performances came from Ryan Ghai who had a busy day taking on all three sprint events. He finished second in the B 100m timed at 13.42 seconds and then went on to record fourth places in both the A 200m and A 300m clocking 27.55 seconds in the former and 46.72 in the latter.
The 4 x 100m relay team of Sam Davies, Nicholas Driver, Ryan Ghai and Corey Fisher placed fourth in a respectable time of 54.89. seconds.

Under 15 Girls
Freya Kirby took on all three throwing events in the girl’s under 15 age group. She was untroubled in her favorite event, the A javelin, taking maximum points with a decent throw of 32.10m, almost three metres ahead of her nearest rival. She followed her winning performance in the Javelin by coming third in the A discus and fourth in the B shot.
Madeleine Turner ran an impressive 2:24.15 in the A 800m to finish second and in the process knocked over five seconds off her personal best set at the first mini league match last month. Two further PBs were to come in the shorter A 300m where she came third in 45.59 seconds and in the A long jump with a distance of 4.25m securing fourth place.
A second place in the 75m hurdles for Jasmine Shore recording a time of 14.25 seconds was also a personal best; all the more remarkable as the hurdlers faced a stiff headwind. Turning her attention to the B javelin, Jasmine put together a good series of throws and was rewarded with a second PB of 22.76m, an improvement of over three metres on her previous best.
Ailsa McMillan cleared 1.25m in the B high jump to take second place while in the A event Isobelle Protheroe’s 1.30m in fifth place added five centimetres to her previous best performance.
The final member of the squad, Eleanor Rigby showed her versatility by returning a time of 5:57.52 in the A 1500m to finish fourth and then in the B long jump recorded 3.35m to take fifth place.

Under 13 Boys
Since the outdoor season started earlier last month, Joe Moss has been breaking records and setting personal bests across a range of events. Sunday was no different for the talented twelve year old who produced three more winning performances in the A 150m, A long jump and A shot. In the 150m sprint, he sped away to a personal best of 20.01 seconds finishing over ten metres in front of the second placed athlete. He broke the sand with a distance of 4.56m in the long jump and had a couple of marginal fouls in his other two jumps which were significantly further. In the shot his winning throw was 7.88m. As well as Joe’s performances the Under 13 Boy’s team showed remarkable strength in depth with several of the squad placing in the top three.
Alfie Ray won the B long jump with a best ever performance of 3.89m following on from a second place in the A 75 metre sprint. He finished his day’s work with a fine effort in the 1200m to take third spot.
In the B 75 metres, Charlie Davies placed second and then went on to claim another runner up position in the A 800m with a debut run of 2:38.31 minutes. Team mate, Archie Kerton took second place as well in the B race timed at 2:57.54 minutes while in the B 150m, Jacob Adams also finished in second place recording a time of 22.59 seconds.
Sebastian Taylor made it a shot put double for AVEAC winning the B event with a best of 6.19m . He placed third in the A high jump as well clearing 1.30m and finished in the same position in the A 75m Hurdles. Harvey Glover scored maximum points in the B javelin and filled the runner up spot in the B sprint hurdles.
The Under 13 boys 4 x 100m relay team comprising of Joe Moss, Charlie Davies, Jacob Adams and Ryan Ghai finished their day’s competition in fine style winning in an excellent time of 56.37, over two seconds ahead of runners up Rushcliffe.

Under 13 Girls
Betsy Wilton was AVEAC’s highest scoring performer in the Girls Under 13 match. She won the javelin beating her previous best mark by over a metre recording a fine distance of 20.94m, took top place as well in the B Long Jump and ended up third in the 75m sprint.
Erin Beresford cleared 1.10m in the high jump to take maximum points and recorded a time of 3:03.04 when placing third in the A 800m. Olivia Irvine finished in third as well in the B 800m while Maggie Flinders did well to come home in second place in the non-scoring two lap race.
Mamie Skipper sprinted to second place in the 70m hurdles registering a time of 13.81 and she also finished in the same position in the B javelin. In the B hurdles Isla Douglas produced a personal best of 14.36 to finish second and then went on to fill third place in the high jump recording another PB of 1.15m.
In the A shot put Elle Ursell finished third throwing 5.82m and then went on to claim another third place in the A long jump with a solid effort of 3.54m.
The 4x100m relay quartet of Betsy Wilton, Oliva Irwin, Mamie Skipper and Erin Beresford ended the day with fine run to claim third place behind Mansfield and Derby.

Team AVEAC can feel proud of their efforts and will now look forward to the second fixture in the three match series at the Shobnall Stadium, Burton on Saturday 3rd June. Thanks are due to the team managers and parents from the club who helped out with officiating duties and supported the athletes throughout the day.
This weekend will be another busy one in the local athletics calendar with many of our athletes from under 11 to senior contesting the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire County Championships at the Harvey Hadden Stadium, Nottingham. The action kicks off on both days at 10.00am.
