Triple jumper Michelle Yalekhue added the North of England Under 20 outdoor title to her growing list of honours with a new personal best performance of 12.27 metres at their track and field championships in Manchester on Sunday. The winning mark also eclipsed her AVEAC club record by four centimetres set last month at the Nottinghamshire County Championships. It meant that Michelle achieved a unique triple jump ‘double’ having also taken the the gold medal at the indoor Northern championships in January.
Michelle’s winning jump came in the second round and was good enough to keep her in pole position througout the rest of the competition. The silver medal was won by Sophie Hampson (Liverpool Harriers) whose best effort was 11.75m while bronze medalist Charlotte Earl (Morpeth) jumped 11.59m.
Next up for the talented jumper will be the England under 20 championships on Saturday 17th June in Chelmsford, Essex. The triple jump will be one of the events to look out for at this premier national contest with sixteen athletes meeting the qualifying standard to take part, nine of the them having jumped over 12 metres this season already. Michelle will be joined by AVEAC second claim athlete Louise Hirst who has also met the qualifying standard.
Also competing at the Northern Championships was Ben Pitts. Taking part in the Under 20 Men’s pole vault he came away with a bronze medal, equaling his personal best of 3.70m. Decathlete Ben who normally will contest several events at major meetings, curtailed himself to only taking part in the vault, as a precautionary measure leading up to the Midland School’s combined events championships at the end of the month.
While the Northern event was taking place in Manchester, senior athletes Jessie Brown and Alice Robinson were in action at the Midland Championships in Nuneaton.
Jessie picked up a bronze medal in the senior women’s javelin and was disappointed with her best throw of 40.65m, almost seven metres down on her personal best set earlier in the season. On another day, she could well have been pushing for the gold medal position with Emma Hamplett (Birchfield Harriers) taking the title on 48.20m.
Alice Robinson found the going tough in the long jump. With a strong headwind playing havoc with her run up she placed fifth. She also finished fourth in the shot with a throw of 8.92m considerably below her best ever of 10.62m. In fact, had she produced a ten metre throw, she would have earned a silver medal.
AVEAC THIRD AT LATEST LOWER YDL MATCH
Shobnall Stadium, Burton – 3rd June
At the second lower YDL match on Saturday, AVEAC’s under 13 and 15 team finished third on 468 points behind Derby (587.5) and Burton (512.5 ). After two fixtures the team are also lying third overall behind their near neighbours.
There were some outstanding performances by individual members of the team with Freya Kirby in particular unleashing her 500 gram javelin out to 37.73m when winning the under 15 girls A pool. Not only was her throw a new personal best by over two metres, it was also a national grade one performance and got her past the qualifying standards for both the English School’s championships at the end of the month in Birmingham and the England Athletics under 15 championships in late August also in Birmingham. Freya had a busy day of throws taking maximum points in the B shot put and third place in the A discus as well. It was also nice to see Jasmine Shore back up Freya’s winning javelin throw by achieving a PB and maximum points in the B pool with a fine effort of 22.66m.
In the under 13 boy’s age group, Joe Moss continued his winning ways with first place finishes in the 150m, Long Jump and Javelin. His 150m time of 19.7 seconds was another national grade one performance and was backed up with a 4.82m long jump and 35.60m javelin throw.
Madeleine Turner ran another excellent 800m race clocking 2:22.2 to won the U15 girls two lapper while another young athlete to shine was Charlie Davis in the U13 boy’s B long Jump who recorded a PB of 4.52m to take maximum points. Charlie’s jump would have placed him second in the A pool behind Joe Moss.
The pick of the bunch in the boy’s U15 age group was Gino Franco’s javelin victory. A throw of 31.23m was almost two metres ahead of his nearest rival. Riley Jones competed in the Hammer for the first time and a debut distance of 22.30m placed him second.
In the under 13 girl’s match Isla Douglas gained maximum points in the B 70m hurdles and B 1200m run and was runner up in the A high jump. Mamie Skipper won the B javelin and placed second in the A hurdles and B shot. There were a spate of further second place finishes by, Maggie Flinders – A long jump and B 1200m, Ellie Ursell – B long jump, Erin Beresford – B high jump and Betsy Wilton – A shot and A javelin.
Additional good erformances in the boy’s under 13 age group were recorded by; Jacob Adams – 1st in the B javelin, Alfie Ray – Ist in the B 200m, Harvey Glover – 2nd in the A 1200m, Archie Kerton – 2nd in the B 800m, Sebastian Taylor – 2nd in the B high jump and Charlie Davis – 2nd in the B shot put.
AVEAC contested three of the sprint relays. The under 13 boy’s team of Charlie Davis, Archie Kerton, Alfie Ray and Joe Moss ran out easy winners in a time of 56.9 seconds and had almost two seconds to spare over second placed Rushcliffe.
The under 13 girl’s team – Erin Beresford, Ellie Ursell, Mamie Skipper and Betsy Wilton – finished 2nd while the under 15 girl’s quartet of Madeleine Turner, Ailsa McMillan, Lucy Rowcroft and Jasmine Shore placed 3rd.

This Saturday the Derbyshire Schools Championships will take place at Moorways and several AVEAC athletes will be taking part. We wish them well!
