Silver for Alice at Trafford Heptathlon

Fourth Trafford Combined Events Classic, Stretford – 9&10 September
AVEAC senior athlete Alice Robinson competed in the Trafford combined events classic recently. A former part time javelin thrower, originally from Ipswich, Alice joined the club in the winter of 2021/2 with the intent of becoming a multi eventer! She quickly set her marker down by attending a coaching course, which has seen her being able  help out at many club sessions, as well as training for the full range of athletics events.

The Trafford heptathlon started with the 100m hurdles and Alice recorded a respectable 19.00 seconds flat. (With a short stride she has had to learn to hurdle with either leg, because she needed four strides between the hurdles, although hard work has recently seen her now very close to three strides, which will lead to much improvement next year.) A good high jump of 1.33m followed, before she pushed the shot out to 9.82m, before completing the 200m in a slightly disappointing 29.76 to end the first day. She then retired to a nearby auntie’s house and pizza (more of this later!)

The second day started with the long jump, where despite a good run through Alice only managed 4.39m despite some good recent training jumps. Then on to her original event, the javelin which she hurled out to a respectable 34.07m. The final event, the 800, saw Alice pull herself round  the two laps to clock 2:43.55.  A total score of 3334 points was just short of her personal best earning her a silver medal behind Nia Rutter (Blackpool, Wyre & Fylde).

During the season Alice has competed for Burton as a higher claim member and scored a whole pile of points helping them to win their league – and has hopes of doing so for AVEAC in the near future. An atomic physicist engineer at Rolls Royce, Alice, has a passion for pizzas and pancakes and has proved a popular member of the coaching team at the club, helping out with various events, along with her training partner Nisha Desai, who is also a valued coach, and who is currently training to defend her W35 400m hurdles title at the European Masters Championships in Italy at the end of the month.
