AVEAC Sports Hall team finish runners up

AVEAC Sports Hall team completed their final match in this year’s Mini League campaign on Sunday and at the end of the proceedings their total points score of 2566 left them runners up to Chesterfield AC who became league champions scoring 2845 points. Derby AC finished third on 1627 points and High Peak AC were fourth on 588 points.  The AVEAC Under 11 Girl’s, Under 11 Boy’s and Under 13 Boy’s emerged as winners of their respective age group matches and it will be interesting to see how the these younger athletes progress in the next few years as they move through the age groups.

Under 11 Girls
Summer Biggs recorded yet another double, winning the Standing Long Jump and Hi Stepper events. Her Hi Stepper time of 13 seconds dead was a new county Under 11 sports hall record while her Long Jump victory meant that she went unbeaten in this event throughout the season. Isla Douglas was our other victor in the age group when she took the 3 lap run with a winning margin of over a second. She also came joint 2nd in the 1 Lap sprint.  Other excellent scores  were recorded by Ruby Arnold in the Hi Stepper and Speed Bounce and Katherine Turner in the Standing Long Jump and Speed Bounce.  The 4 x 1 Lap relay team finished the day in joint first with Chesterfield  with both teams recording 57.10 seconds

Under 11 Boys
Jacob Adams has been phenomenal this season  and once again ended up winning two events, the 1 Lap Sprint and Standing Long Jump. He was ably supported by Ethan Ray who was the quickest athlete in the Hi Stepper,  Lucas Sangster who was 2nd in the 3 Lap Run,  Fraser Jones 3rd in the 1 Lap and Archie Kerton also 3rd in the Hi Stepper.

Under 13 Girls
Madeleine Turner jumped the furthest in the Standing Long Jump to take maximum points. She then combined with Jasmine Shore to won the 8 Lap Parlauf race by a margin of over two seconds from Chesterfield. Jasmine finished 2nd in the 2 Lap Sprint as well. Erin Beresford placed 2nd in the Speed Bounce and 3rd in the Standing Long Jump. Betsy Wilton scored valuable points in the Shot and then combined with her three team mates to won the Sprint Relay.

Under 13 Boys
The Boy’s team in this age group have produced many outstanding performances throughout the season and this carried on in this final fixture. The 8 Lap Parlauf  epitomised the high standards they have set themselves when they finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Corey Fisher and Joe Moss crossed the line in first and were followed by Alfie Ray and Harvey Glover in 2nd and Sebastian Taylor and Ethan Barnett in 3rd.  There was a one, two, three as well in the Standing Long Jump; Riley Jones took the honours in a closely contested event with only a few centimetres separating him from Joe Moss and Ryan Ghai. Other top three performances were recorded by Corey Fisher and Ryan Ghai who were narrowly edged out in the 2 Lap sprint in 2nd and 3rd places, Joe Moss and Riley Jones finished 2nd and 3rd in the Shot and Harvey Glover also placed a good 2nd in the Speed Bounce.  It was fitting that our national record breaking  relay team of Joe, Riley, Ryan and Corey should finish the day winning the 4 x 2 Lap race, beating the existing county record by four tenths of a second.

Under 15 Boys and Girls
In the Boy’s U15 age group good performances were recorded by  Seb Banks who recorded a ‘double’ winning the  4 Lap  Run and Speed Bounce and Jack Moss who placed 3rd in the 2 Lap Sprint and Shot. Isobelle Protheroe, our only U15 girl in action, had a good day winning the Standing Long jump and placing 3rd in both the 2 Lap Sprint and Shot.

AVEAC young athletes have had a good campaign during this year’s Sports Hall season and no doubt will be hoping to build on their successes with a view of making a big challenge to go one better next season and lift the overall League title.

Derby Midweek Road Races, Raynesway – 15th March
Three AVEAC middle distance athletes and their coach Geoff Lowry took part in a 1 Mile mixed open road race in the penultimate Derby Midweek series last Wednesday evening. Weather conditions were far from ideal with lashing rain throughout the evening. The conditions did not deter the AVEAC quartet with three of them recording personal bests. Eden Klugman finished 3rd, knocking four seconds off his previous best in a time of 5:31 minutes. He was followed by Coach Geoff in 4th in a time of 5:42 minutes. Fifth place was filled by Madeleine Turner who was the first female to finish. Her time of 5:50 minutes knocked eighteen seconds off her PB set at the February event. Last but not least was Isabelle Szczepanski who finished 12th in 7:01 minutes, beating her previous best by twelve seconds. The final race in the series will take place in the daylight on Wednesday 12th April.

Manchester Open Indoor Meeting, Sport City – 12th March
Under 17 athlete Hugo Thomas put together two pleasing performances at the Sale Harriers Indoor Open Meeting on Sunday. In one of the graded 60 metre races he finished 4th recording a personal best of 7.59 seconds beating his previous mark set last month in Loughborough by half a second.  He then went on to finish 3rd in the Long Jump with a distance of 5.40m.

Yellow Jacket Invitational Meeting, Atlanta, Georgia – 17th March
Having just finished her indoor season a few weeks ago, Ella Rush was back in action taking part in her first outdoor meeting stateside. Getting in some 100m Hurdles preparation for Heptathlons later in the season and competing against more specialist hurdlers, she finished sixth in her race. Ella was pleased with her time of 14.63 seconds which is good for her first outing this season and is not that far off her personal best.
