Weekly roundup – Busy week for AVEAC

It has been a busy week for AVEAC athletes as we approach the end of what seems a very long outdoor season.  Since last weekend athletes have been in action at the U.K. School Games, the England Under 17 Championships as well as Open Meetings at Charnwood, Trafford and Doncaster.  

Prestigious honour for Ryan and George U.K. School Games, Loughborough – Friday 2nd September 

Ryan Rawlinson and George Reynolds had the honour of being selected for the prestigious U.K. School Games held at Loughborough. The Multi-Sport event is modelled on the Olympic and Paralympic Games and attracts the top young athletes in the U.K. at Under 17 level. Both were selected for the Long Jump and they acquitted themselves well finishing in 4th and 8th places. The competition was hotly contested with Ryan jumping 6.39m,  just missing a medal by ten centimetres. George who had trouble in the first few rounds with his run up managed to get out to 6.24m in the final round. 

England Under Age Championships, Bedford – Sunday 28th August
Prior to taking part at the U.K. School Games, Ryan Rawlinson was AVEAC’s only representative at the National Under 15 and 17 Championships last Sunday in Bedford.  Ryan’s run up did not go to plan and he only recorded two valid jumps. His best effort was 6.27m which left him in 7th place. 

Charnwood ‘Stars of the Future’ Meeting, Loughborough – Sunday 28th August

The club had several athletes in action at this popular end of season open hosted by Charnwood Athletic Club last Sunday. 

Isla Hiscocks was in fine sprinting form in the Girls U15 100m. She qualified for the final in second place behind Imogen Jones (Wreake and Soar Valley) in a time of 13.04 seconds and then in the final turned the tables on her rival by taking first place. Her final time was a bit slower recording 13.18 seconds, not surprising as the it was into a -2.2 headwind;  Jones finished inches behind  Isla in 13.22 seconds. 

Under 11 athlete, Isla Douglas had a busy competition taking part in three races. two at Under 13 level and one in her own age group. She reached the final of the Under 13 75m sprint finishing 6th in 11.86 seconds after recording a PB in her heat of 11.71 seconds.  She then went on to finish 4th in the U13 150m graded race in 24.82 seconds and was the second best Girl in a mixed Under 11 600m in a time of 2 minutes 09.96 seconds. 

AVEAC athletes filled the top four positions in the Open  Girl’s and Women’s Long Jump. Katie Potts took top spot jumping 4.79m, Imogen Laugharne’s distance was 4.71m, followed by Grace Young on 4.69m with Nicole Bonser jumping 4.65m in fourth. Isla Hiscocks swapped her sprint spikes for her jump spikes and finished 7th with a distance of 4.31m. 

Nicole Bonser had earlier took part in the 200m as well, returning a time of 28.86 seconds in her graded race finishing sixth. 

Elsewhere in the field Jessie Brown continued refining her new approach run up in the Javelin and recorded a distance of 39.66m to won her pool. Imogen Laugharne getting in some vital practice for the English School’s Combined events Heptathlon in a few weeks time threw 15.93m. 

Trafford Medal Meeting, Stretford – Monday 29th August
Freya Kirby traveled to the Longford Park, Stretford,  on Bank Holiday Monday and came away with a victory in the Girl’s Under 15 Javelin.  In a field of seven athletes Freya’s  best throw was 28.99m. 

DoncasterEvening Grand Prix,  Tuesday 30th August
Isla Hiscocks continued her good Long Jump form on Tuesday evening at the Doncaster End of Season Grand Prix meeting. Competing in the Open Women’s Pool, the U15 year old smashed her previous best by nineteen centimetres with an excellent distance of 4.58m. It left her fourth overall in a field of thirty one competitors across all age groups. Isla also finished 2nd in a graded 100m recording 13.78 into a very strong headwind.
