AVEAC hosted the second Derbyshire Mini League cross country fixture at Rutland Sports Park on Saturday. Being local, the turnout of AVEAC young athletes was very encouraging with twenty seven taking part, the best it has been since before the pandemic! The young runners did extremely well with one individual and two team victories being recorded.
The individual victory came in the U13 Girl’s race when Madeleine Turner won convincingly by twenty seconds from Erin Colebrook (Buxton AC) who had finished in top position at the first fixture. Madeleine was ably supported by Isobel Summer in 4th and Sienna Thorpe in 7th. The three combined to give a team score of 12 points to take first place, two points ahead of Derby. Also taking part were Amelia Whittaker who finished 8th, Erin Berrisford finished 10th and Jasmine Shore ended up in 11th place.
Not to be outdone, the U13 Boys also won their team race scoring 16 points. Harry Glover had a fine outing finishing 3rd with the other team scorers being Corey Fisher in 6th place and Sam Davies in 7th. Just outside the scoring places was Henry Jack who finished 8th.

There was a great turn out by our youngest athletes in the U11 races. Eight AVEAC runners faced the starter in the Girl’s race with Isla Douglas heading the group with an excellent run in 3rd place. Isla led the team to 2nd place overall with the other two scoring members, Rosie Boyer and Katherine Turner finishing 5th and 6th. Good runs were also recorded by the rest of the AVEAC contingent with Summer Biggs (7th), Eliza Swift (12th), Ruby Arnold (13th), Maggie Flanders (17th) and Ruby Shore (18th).
The U11 Boy’s also finished 2nd in their team event. The scorers were Charlie Davies running well to finish 4th, Zac Blagg was 7th and Kyran McCrellis finished 9th to give a combined score of 20 points. They were ably supported by Lucas Sangster (10th), Harry Towns (14th), George Bilby (22nd) and Marcus Parsons Loades (24th).
At Under 15 level Eleanor Rigby and Kian Whittaker were our standard bearers. Eleanor ran solidly to claim 3rd place in the Girl’s event while the ever reliable Kian placed 7th in the Boy’s race.
The final fixture in the three match series will take place at Moorways Sports Village on Saturday 17th December.
