Third overall for lower YDL team

Lower Youth Development League North East Division 1A, Mansfield – July 08

The third and final fixture in this year’s league campaign took place at Berryhill Park, Mansfield last Saturday. Conditions were far from ideal with heavy rain showers being the order of the day. Despite the awful weather, the young AVEAC team of under 13 and under 15 athletes rose to the challenge finishing  third on 402 points in a close contest behind Derby (481 points) and Burton (427 points). When the final points over the tree fixtures were tallied up, it also meant that AVEAC had finished third overall behind their near neighbours. Derby were crowned league champions and, along with Burton, will go on next month to contest the Midlands promotion match against six other teams from across the region with the first two teams guaranteed a place in next year’s premier division. Despite just missing out on the promotion play off, the AVEAC team can feel justly proud on their overall third placing; a huge improvement on their sixth place in 2022.

For the third match in a row, Joe Moss recorded a treble in the under 13 boy’s match with first place finishes in the A 150m, 75m hurdles and high jump. His performances were excellent in the conditions as he clocked 19.2 seconds in the 150m, 13.5 in the hurdles and had a fantastic leap of 1.53m in the high jump to rank him fourth overall in the under 13 boy’s Power of Ten UK rankings.

Other maximum points scorers in the U13 boy’s match included Alfie Ray in the B 75metres in which he was timed at 11.1 seconds and Charlie Davies who finished the B 800m in 2:38.1 minutes.  At the end of the day Alfie and Charlie teamed up with Joe and Archie Kerton to comprehensively take the honours in the 4 x 100m relay in 56.5 seconds, over a second ahead of runners up Rushcliffe.

In the under 15 girl’s match, Madeleine Turner stepped up a distance to tackle the A 1500m and she did not disappoint with a clear cut victory in 5:00.4, eleven seconds in front of the second placed runner.

Isla Hiscocks produced a personal best in a closely contested A 75m hurdles. Her time of 12.6 seconds secured her a narrow victory over her Burton AC rival who was given the same time.

Freya Kirby had her customary win in the A javelin; her throw of 33.67m was excellent in the conditions. Jasmine Shore took maximum points in the B javelin with a solid effort of 22.51m.

In the U13 girl’s match, Mamie Skipper was our only maximum points scorer winning the B javelin. Betsy Wilton showed good form in the  A 75m dash and A javelin finishing second in both.  Ellie Ursell also did well to claim second place in the long jump.

Riley Jones was our top performer in the under 15 boy’s match with two second place finishes in the discus and hammer. His distance in the discus was 26.94m while his debut hammer contest saw him achieve a throw of 20.97m.

Thanks are due to the AVEAC team managers and parents who acted as officials for their sterling efforts during all three matches this season.
