Derbyshire Athletics Mini League Match 4, Moorways Sports Village – July 15
Saturday 15th July saw the grand finale of this year’s outdoor mini league. Overall, AVEAC finished in 3rd place with 436.5 points behind Derby AC in first place on 525.5 and Chesterfield in second scoring 481. Out of the six age categories, our U13 boys who triumphed throughout the league and, finished in first place overall. This final match will unfortunately be remembered for the wet conditions with the concluding events, the 200m, 300m and relays being called off. However, competition team spirit was in abundance (as always!) and we had some new faces competing at this match for the first time keeping energy levels spiralling positively throughout the day.
This final match saw our highest number of athletes from AVEAC compete – there were 42 in total across the U11, U13 and U15 age groups.
At the end of the match, there were medals awarded to those who had set new mini league records. Congratulations to Joe Moss for his hat-trick of mini league records in the U13 boys javelin, discus and shot put. This has been an excellent season for Joe with special achievements throughout in a variety of events.
Summer Biggs had an impressive end to an exciting season, and also received a medal for a new mini league record in the long jump. Summer jumped 4.08m which places her 2nd in the UK for her age group (1cm behind the U11 number 1!). Congratulations Summer!

Congratulations to all our ‘rising stars’ who ran in the U9 race!
Thank you to Rich Woodward and Vicki Shore for Team Managing and organising athletes to their events on the day. These mini leagues support our athletes to develop their competition experiences; thank you to all of the coaches who input and encourage their skill-development every week.
Thank you to those who officiated the shot put: Bob Boyd, Becky Moss, Sarah Turner and Bailey Beresford. If you would like to get involved with any officiating courses ready for next year’s outdoor season, contact any of the team managers or committee members via the website / social media, or just speak to a team manager on the day of any meetings or at training. Thank you also to Geoff Lowry for all of his officiating on the start-line. A final thank you must go to Julie Feeney and all of Derbyshire Athletics Committee who have made these matches possible.
It has been a great season with so many memorable moments, personal bests being achieved and so many smiling faces wearing yellow vests! Congratulations to all AVEAC athletes who have competed in the 2023 Mini League – you have made the club and your coaches proud.
