Last Saturday (13th April 2024) saw the first of the Club’s outdoor matches, following on from the SportsHall season.
37 young athletes made their way to the Moorways track, collected their numbers and selected their events, ready to enjoy, for a number, their first outdoor athletics experience. Rich and Dan, joint team managers, sorted the athletes, whilst Becky and Bob put together a team to officiate our allotted event, the discus. However, this was thrown into problems as the in track throwing cage had been vandalised and the event was moved to the hidden, outside, throwing area – this meant the officials were unable to observe any other events and understandably some parents therefore withdrew their offers of help. The team were further hindered by an injury to Joe Moss in warm up which necessitated mum Becky having to leave her officiating role to take him home. Dan valiantly stepped in ably supported by Andy McMillan and Vicky Shore to support Bob.

So the Club start the outdoor season with a shed load of very good performances which is a great reflection on the positive attitude of the athletes to their training and to the professionalism and expertise of the coaches who work with them. Thanks also to the team managers, officials, helpers, results recorders (the ever reliable Jolly family) and spectators for their support. We now need to ensure we get similar or better turnouts for the next fixture, in two weeks time, as well as our other league competitions.
