Lower YDL – Match One Victory for AVEAC

Our first Lower YDL was on a sunny but fresh Saturday (20th April) at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. It didn’t feel ideal conditions being rather cold in the wind; however, AVEAC athletes rose to the challenge and competed brilliantly, producing an overall team win and many PBs too! Congratulations to all!

As one of our early season AVEAC team competitions, many of our U13 and U15 athletes were attempting new events following the run-jump-throw ethos of the club and there were many debuts on the track/field from a number of new members.

It was also many parents’ moments to debut in the officiating role which was really beneficial to our athletes and overall position of the club at the end of the match – thank you to Becky Moss, Andy McMillan, Heather Douglas, Claire Dickenson and Craig Brackenbury for your energy, time and support! We also had more parents wanting to help so it will be your chance at the next event.

Under 13s
Our U13 girls were a team of 5: Isla Douglas, Bibi Mulholland, Maggie Flinders, Summer Biggs, and Aimee Brackenbury. One key podium gold position was for lower U13 girl, Summer Biggs, in the 70m hurdles in a time of 12.7 seconds; Summer also came a close second in the long jump with 4.15m and 3rd in the A string 75m run with 11.4 seconds. Bibi Mulholland secured two silver podium positions: one in the B string 75m in a time of 10.9 seconds and in the longer distance, showing her flexibility in her running, in the A string, second place in the 1200m in a promising time of 5mins 6 seconds. Bibi also secured a silver position in the A string shot put – 5.45m. Isla Douglas continued her great start to the season with another personal best in the 800m of 2.45.3 minutes. She also showed her multi-talented abilities winning the B string 70m hurdles in a time of 13.4seconds and winning the A string high jump, clearing 1.14m. Maggie Flinders has started the season well with a great 4.05m winning the B string long jump and a determined 800m run, securing bronze podium position in the B string. Also showing her running flexibility, Maggie also ran a great 24.2 seconds in the 150m. New to U13, Aimee Brackenbury showed determination in her sprinting and won the B string 150m in 24.5 seconds! She also ran a great 11.6 seconds in 75m. She also won the B string high jump clearing 1.05m. Well done! The girls still had enough energy at the end of the day to run impressively in the 4x100m – even as a new team together, hand-overs were smooth and clean and Isla, Maggie, Aimee and Summer were determined to win the race and did that with a close finish, winning by 0.1seconds taking the win from Mansfield – congratulations!

Our U13 boys were a team of 4: Charlie Davies, Lucas Sangster, Isaac Smith and Fraser Jones. To end the day together, they finished a close 2nd to Mansfield in the 4x100m relay. The boys showed their versatility throughout the match with many personal bests and new events which together secured valuable team points! Charlie Davies had a great match gaining triple golds in his A string events! He scored another personal best in his 800m with 2.30.3 minutes; he ably and confidently led from the front all the way through producing an exciting run! He also won the long jump with a secure jump of 4.53m and the high jump with 1.27m. Under 15s
Our largest athlete group was our U15 girls with 8 athletes which meant we were able to have two relay teams, a 4x 300m and 4x100m, at the end of the day. Our athletes were a mix of lower and upper U15 girls: Jasmine Shore, Ailsa McMillan, Jessica Dickinson, Lucy Rowcroft, Mamie Skipper, Erin Beresford, Olivia Irvine and Lucy Norman. Jasmine Shore continued her gold start to the season claiming double first place positions in both the javelin with a throw of 19.52m and high jump, clearing 1.30m. To complete her multi-event day, she also ran in the 200m with a time of 29.3seconds. Ailsa McMillan, returning from injury, has made a great start to her season building up with a great 4.13m in the long jump, claiming silver position in the A string, and bronze in the 100m B string with a good time of 14.9secs. Ailsa also produced a good ‘put’ of 6.75m. Lucy Norman, new to U15 age group, ran a debut in both short and long races with really encouraging outcomes – a determined run in the 800m with a time of 2.55mins and in the 100m, 15.6seconds – well done, Lucy! We encourage our girls to try a variety of events and Olivia stepped up to the challenge and determinedly ran her 800m – it was cold and windy at that point in the day so Olivia must be pleased with her race time. Olivia, in her preferred events, had a wonderful gold position in the ‘new’ hammer event with 15.21m and a win in the discus B string with 13.89m. Jessica Dickinson had a really encouraging first YDL match; silver position in the A string discus with 14.46m and a good run in the 100m with a time of 15.2secs. Lucy Rowcroft had a great start to the season; a strong time in the 300m of 48 seconds, an encouraging long jump of 3.87m and 14.4 seconds in the100m. Erin Beresford continued her great form running in the 75m hurdles and securing a close bronze position with 13.3seconds, a high jump of 1.25m taking the top spot for the B string and a good run of 200m with a time of 29.1seconds. Mamie also worked hard for the team and scored valuable points with a second place in the B string shot put, with a put of 6.01m, bronze position in the 75m hurdles and first place in the B string javelin with 11.11m. Jasmine, Ailsa, Jessica and Erin teamed up to run the 4x300m – a close second place but the girls really enjoyed this team event – well done! Lucy, Olivia, Mamie and Lucy teamed up for the 4 x100m and together ran a sub-60sec relay – well done!

Our U15 boys were: Riley Jones, Corey Fisher, Alfie Ray, Joe Moss and Sebastian Mcaughtrie. Sebastian, in his debut at YDL, ran the 80m hurdles with a time of 15.1secs which secured him a new PB. He also ran the 200m with an encouraging time of 30.2secs. To show his flexibility, he also threw the discus a brilliant distance of 19.18m. Throwing the shot put 10.93m, the discus 31.23m and the hammer 28.32m, which was an exceptional PB, was Riley Jones in his triple gold A string throws. Congratulations! Running the 200m in 25.5secs and the 300m in 42.8secs which was a PB for Corey Fisher, secured him two silver podium positions in the A string races. The ‘Birthday Boy’ Joe Moss ran the 100m in a time of 12.3secs which was a brilliant time and A string win! He threw the shot put a marvellous distance of 10.38m to gain a PB. To carry on the PB streak of the day, he threw a new weight in the javelin a distance of 25.52m to gain first place. Well done! Alfie Ray ran the 100m in a time of 14.5secs and the 800m with a time of 2.42 mins which were both amazing results considering the cold conditions. Running the 1500m was Harvey Glover and he ran the time of 5.03.4 minutes which is a huge PB and earning valuable team points. He also jumped 3.62m in the long jump. To show his run jump throw flexibility he threw the javelin a tremendous 19.42m which was another PB which was well earned for Harvey – congratulations! To finish off an excellent day Joe, Alfie, Riley and Corey ran a strong 4x100m relay securing an excellent position of first place whilst running a time of 51.6secs.

Overall, AVEAC finished in first place which is a terrific start to this year’s team event. Well done to all athletes for your willingness to try (and have success!) in new events and also demonstrate commendable team spirit to your team mates throughout the day. We also wished Happy Birthday to Joe Moss and enjoyed some birthday cupcakes together! Happy Birthday Joe!
