Third Place Finish For AVEAC In Lower YDL

On a cloudy but very warm Sunday in Burton, 23 AVEAC athletes crossed into Staffordshire for the third and final fixture of the Lower Youth Development League. With an un-familiar track and a third place standing to defend, the squad showed admirable resilience and team spirit, delivering many strong performances across both age groups and disciplines.

Over the three fixtures, we took 23 athletes for each one. That’s a good sum but, for next year’s competition, it would be good to increase that as it gives more chances to more athletes and increases our possibility of collecting points.

Under 13s

For the girls, Aimee Brackenbury achieved 11.2 and Sophie Humphrey with 12.3 in the 75m. Moving to the 70m hurdles, Amie Saxby ran a 15.5 followed by Elsie Whittleton in 17.20. In the 150m, Aimee B completed her double with a 22.9 with Amie S running 24.5 (PB). In the 800m, Katherine Turner ran a 2.44.10 whilst Elsie Whittleton came home in 3:21.00. No one entered the 1200m, why not have a go next time? 😊

In the field, Sophie leapt 3.12m in the long jump with Elsie also doing well in 2.61m. Katherine came 3rd in the High jump clearing 1.15m. In the throws, Aimee B shot putted 5.26m, with Katherine winning the B string with a 4.94m throw. Finally, Sophie threw 7.02m in the javelin and Amie S threw 5.38m.

There was unfortunately no girls relay, due to lack of numbers.

So, onto the boys, we had 3 brave participants.

In the 75m, Elliott Wright brought his time down with a 10.6 sprint. Excellent time. Adam Banton followed up with 11.00 in the B string. In the 150m, Elliott ran 21.00 whilst Dylan Knowles sprinted back in 21.7. Our sole 800m runner was Dylan – 2:40:30 was his time, in a good effort.

In the jumps, Dylan leapt 3.31m in the long jump. There were no high jumpers and, in the throws, Elliot putted 4.22m in the shot, whilst Adam, who had unfortunately thrown 2 no-throws, was clever enough to plant the javelin 1.98m to score some points!

There was sadly no relay team today due to the small numbers.

Under 15s

Another strong show for the U15 girls at AVEAC as 8 athletes participated.

In the 75m hurdles, Erin Beresford ran a 12.30 to finish 2nd whilst Maggie Flinders was 2nd in the B string with a 14.00 run. Moving to the 100m, Olivia Irvine sprinted a strong 13.70 as A runner, whilst Charlotte Slater gave a great performance in 14:20 which was a PB. Catherine Wayne, who was a non-scorer, also ran a PB in 15.1. Moving to the 200m, Biscuits took on the longer sprint and saw a time of 29.10; teammate Maggie completed the distance in 30.30. At YDL, the 300m is also a sprint for the U15s, and we had 2 competitors. Erin came 4th in 46.8 for the A string, whilst Lucy Norman completed her 300m in a good time of 46.7.

In the middle-distance, Lucy won the A string in 2.33.40 in the 800m, assisted by Catherine who ran a 3:06, well done. For the longer 1500m, Isla Douglas did a 5:50:70 which was a great effort.

In the field, Isabella Parsons-Loades came 1st in the discus with a throw of 17.28, Isla took 1st place in the B string with a 13.62 throw. In the shot Biscuits putted 7.62 to place 3rd. In the hammer competition, Bella came 1st with a throw of 23.99 (oooo nearly 24). Charlotte Slater was 1st for the B string in 23.30. Finally in the javelin, Erin threw 21.39m to come 3rd. As an aside, the officiating in the u15 girls javelin was different gravy.

In the jumps, Isla jumped 3.47 in the long jump A string whilst in the high jump Maggie jumped 1.30m assisted by Charlotte who unfortunately could not make a legal jump – never mind, well done.

We were again able to put in 2 relay teams: in the 4x100m and in the 4x300m. In the shorter run, the team of Catherine W, Sophie (U13), Charlotte and Olivia came home in 59.70 whilst in the longer sprint team of Lucy, Erin and Isla and Maggie came home 3rd again in 3.15.00.

The boys’ team consisted of Joe Stimson, Harvey Glover (“McGlovin”), Marcus Parsons-Loades, Alfie Ray (“Shades”), Seb McAughtrie, Isaac Smith and Gabriel Parr.

For the hurdles, Seb came 1st with a 13.30 in the A String; Joe S ran a 17.30 as the only competitor in the B string. On the flat, Alfie ran a wind legal PB 12.9 to place 4th in the 100m and Isaac came 2nd in the B string with 13.4. In the 200m, Alfie placed 2nd in 25:5 whilst McGlovin came 3rd in the B string with 28.7. In the 300m Isaac came 4th with a time of 44:30 whereas Seb won the B string in 41.20. In the 800m, Harvey ran 2.19.60, to place 4th. Joe did the 1500m in 4:47. Well done boys!

In the field, Joe S continued a good day with a 4.21m leap in the long jump assisted by Isaac who jumped 4.84m. In the high jump, Harvey came 2nd and jumped an impressive 1.35m with Alfie who won the B string with a 1.30m. On to the throws, Marcus putted 7.93m to win the A string with Gabe putting 6.80m to clinch 2nd in the B string. For the discus, Marcus threw 24.39m to take 1st place, Gabe came 2nd in 14.09m in the B string. In the hammer Marcus came 2nd with 15.81m and Gabe was also placed 2nd in the B string with 11.18m. Finally for the javelin, Seb came 2nd with a throw of 29.89. Over 30m next time Seb!

For the relay 4x100m a team of Seb, Harvey, Alfie and Isaac achieved 3rd place in a good 52.8. There was no AVEAC participation in the 4x300m relay.

A third place finish in a very good league is, I would say, a good season. As mentioned, this was the last lower YDL of the season, so we have a year to build the foundations for 2026, though of course there are still plenty of competitions for athletes between now and October.

Well done to everyone who competed this season, you did the club proud. Thank-you and good luck in your remaining competitions this season. We hope to see you again next season, when the Lower YDL will be changing to U16 and U14 age groups, meaning we will have many familiar faces next season.
