The sun was shining at The Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton for the popular Winter Warm Up open competition on Sunday 17th March. Daisy Kaye (U20) and Freya Kirby (U17) have both moved up an age group this season, and made a promising start following their winter training programme.
This was Daisy’s first outing with the 600g javelin and she threw consistently with a best of 36.81m, slightly up on her opener in the same competition last year. Freya showed a similar year-on-year improvement with a best on the day of over 31m. They will both be back in Nuneaton for the next open in a couple of weeks’ time, hoping to clinch the English Schools qualifying standards early in the season.
The athletes were excited to be competing alongside Paralympian Hollie Arnold, the current World Champion and World Record holder, who was using the competition as a useful warm up ahead of the Para World Championships in Japan in May. It was certainly a very valuable experience to rub shoulders with someone of Hollie’s experience and talent – she even joined the girls for a drink and a chat in the café afterwards!
